I was curious about which screen capture tool would outperform OBS, Fraps, and Nvidia Shadow Play. I’ve heard Fraps offers top-notch quality thanks to its lossless recording, but file sizes can be huge and performance suffers with poor configurations. Shadow Play tends to sacrifice video and audio clarity for smoother gameplay. OBS has two encoders—standard X.264 and Nvidia NVENC—and you can use NVENC for better performance without major quality loss. I’ve never tested OBS for local recordings, but it seems NVENC would likely match Shadow Play’s performance while improving speed. OBS provides more flexibility, so the audio issues in Shadow Play could be fixed with NVENC in OBS. Adobe Premiere Pro uses H.264 encoding; matching your project files to that setting should yield optimal results. What do others think? Which option do you recommend for the best balance of quality and performance? Thanks, GR412

Shadowplay for games, OBS for other tasks. I rely on H.264 for all content.

I rely on OBS for all tasks, employing H.264... it appears to work well.

Shadowplay looks great when it runs smoothly with very little or no frame rate drop.

I can confirm whether image clarity is your priority. Shadowplay isn't the best option, but for FPS performance, it's the only viable choice.

I see, do you think OBS is superior to Fraps? The thing is, I’m not clear on what Fraps actually uses—it’s a codec. OBS, on the other hand, relies on H.264. What do you think?

It's widely understood that shadowplay cannot be affected in FPS during capture.
