I own many older titles, mostly for PC (all non-PSP games listed here). This isn't about just launching them due to numerous workarounds I've tried. I've faced a lot of issues with unstable gameplay and also had games that previously worked but now don't run at all. Still, some have functioned surprisingly well—especially the recent Tomb Raider entries. I'm curious if these problems might stem from running on Windows XP, which is the standard OS. I've also been studying IT in school and wondered whether dual-booting into XP or using a virtual machine could help these classic games. With my current specs (XMPalus motherboard, i7-10700K, 16GB RAM, RTX 2070, etc.), do you think they'd improve performance?
I play games released on physical media from the 90s using an i9 10900kf/3090 and Windows 10 without any problems. I obtain them from GOG during sales when prices are between $3 and $5. A favorite is X-Com: UFO Defense (1993), which runs on DosBox with minor ini adjustments for a wide monitor. They also have Tomb Raiders titles. I used a retro setup before, but now it’s unnecessary thanks to DosBox and GOG access.
VM instead of dual boot or a second machine. Also, I think GOG refreshes its content for modern systems.
A basic virtual machine running Windows XP should suffice, even though I haven’t found any classic titles that don’t work in Windows 10. NFS4 on a CD still functions well, as do Soul Reaver, the Legacy of Kain series, Carmaqeddon, and similar games.
