I just assembled my new computer, but it seems the motherboard lacks a built-in Wi-Fi module. For gaming performance, which Wi-Fi card would be most suitable?

There isn't a specific reason mentioned for why someone can't go wired.

We attempted a wired link with an adapter that connects to a power outlet, but I didn’t receive any signal, and I wasn’t inclined to run a cable from the modem to my computer.

Didn't feel like it or wasn't possible? A solid wired link is always the best option.

It seems we might have to connect a cable in an unusual way by going up two floors to reach my PC.

If the router is on the second floor, that adds extra motivation to test, since WiFi usually performs better on the same level. Feel free to try WiFi as a temporary solution while you assess the benefits of a wired connection, but remember that a wired setup ensures the fastest speeds and lowest latency, offering the most reliable performance.
