plex operates smoothly across various systems, including many NAS devices. A friend uses it on FreeNAS with good remote access. I use it on a Mac Mini after purchasing a quad-core i7 chipset. I’d likely choose either FreeNAS or a Linux distribution since I don’t need to pay for Windows.

It might still require you to reboot to apply updates on Linux, and you can operate it without a graphical interface.

Really? Among all the advantages of Linux, isn't that just the highlight?

The largest version runs smoothly without interruptions, and it doesn’t require a GUI, which is quite convenient. For simply watching media, neither option seems significantly superior.

Ubuntu servers receive the most extensive security backing among all options. Debian also offers solid protection. For installing Debian as a server without Xserver, use the net install cd command.

When you understand what you're doing, a GUI won't beat performance, and fewer controls mean less overhead. Ubuntu Server is straightforward to set up and works on most systems. If you prefer a graphical interface, you can still use any desktop environment, making the GUI an optional choice rather than something essential.

For a dedicated media server, a Linux distribution is recommended because it's free. Buying Windows licenses just for Plex isn't worthwhile. If you're using it as a standalone server, consider adding redundancy for backup.

I prefer Lubuntu because it's a lighter version of Ubuntu. I run Plex on an older computer, and I suggest going for Linux since you won't face unexpected shutdowns, avoid costs, and save resources that could help with video conversion.
