I need an operating system for playing retro games on an old HP laptop. You prefer something other than Recalbox. Also, the system has a failing hard drive.

Choose the operating system that best fits your hardware and desired games. I own a 120MHz Pentium Shitbox running Windows 98SE for DOS titles, another laptop with Windows XP for older software that resents Windows 10, and I recommend using a Raspberry Pi 4 with Retropie to run PlayStation 1 and similar classics.

It's an HP laptop running an i5 4300M at 2.6 GHz, paired with a PI Zero W.

I tried setting up a simple Linux distribution like Ubuntu and added RetroArch and Dolphin. Both programs work well on Linux and are straightforward to install, so you won’t have to worry about your system using too much memory when idle. Note: For older consoles such as NES, SNES, Megadrive, N64, and GBA, RetroPie might run on a Pi Zero W, but it’s uncertain if it can handle the GameCube. The laptop should manage whatever you need.
