I own a 2007 eMachines running Windows Vista, but my machine is becoming sluggish. Details: Model ET1161-07, rated 3.0, 32-bit only, 3 GB RAM, Windows experience score not rated, CPU is an AMD Athlon Dual Core 4050e.

Avoid launching a complete modern desktop Linux—it’ll perform much worse than Windows. I suggest OpenBSD; it works smoothly even on my outdated 32-bit Thinkpad.
