Top Linux options for a Windows 10 gaming PC
I chose to switch to Linux Mint Cinnamon on my laptop from Windows 10 because I was feeling uninspired and wanted a new experience. I’m really enjoying it and don’t understand why I missed the chance sooner. Now that I’ve tried it out, I’m thinking about converting my gaming PC to Linux too. From what I’ve seen about gaming-focused distros, they seem limited mainly to gaming, with little support for word processing or web browsing. I’m familiar with running games on Steam on Linux and can use Wine or PlayOnLinux, but I don’t want a distro that slows down gaming performance. My current rig has a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB of 3000MHz G.Skill RAM, and a 1050Ti that I plan to upgrade soon. I’m new to Linux but comfortable with terminal tasks, and I’d appreciate any advice. Have a great Sunday!
Most Linux distributions perform similarly in gaming terms, but Debian-based ones generally receive better support. Trying Mint, Ubuntu, Debian or similar systems works well. Gaming distros like SteamOS are essentially Debian with Steam preinstalled, offering nothing extra special.
I'll explore Ubuntu or Debian, but since I'm familiar with Mint, I'll stick with that. I'll also try other distributions. Thanks for the guidance—your advice helped a lot, and the Linux community has been really supportive during my switch from Windows 10.
Download Ubuntu. When checking Steam game system requirements, Ubuntu is consistently listed as the minimum OS, not another distribution. Other Linux versions work just fine and perform similarly to Ubuntu. I recommend Ubuntu since it gives you a solid foundation—if you encounter issues, support teams can reference your actual setup rather than just suggesting Ubuntu. I’ve faced this situation with a game called Feral; they insisted on Ubuntu even though I was using Arch, which didn’t help.
