Hello, I'm looking for the top LGA 1155 CPU choice for gaming. I currently have an i5-2500 and a motherboard from ASUS P8Z68 Pro/Gen3. I need something that offers great performance while staying within my budget, but I’m open to upgrading if it’s worth it.

The i7-3770k will fit in your current setup since the motherboard allows overclocking. However, for better performance, consider upgrading the motherboard, RAM, and CPU to a newer socket if you can afford it. You could also sell the old components for a good return. This situation might change soon.

This purchase isn't great unless you're willing to pay a low price. A 3700k model with OC works at 4/8, but if you're lucky and the clock runs fast, it might last a while. It's probably not very long-lasting. The 4/8 specs seem similar to 6/6 now, which isn't expected to last beyond the upcoming console launches. Of course, it could still work depending on how games handle threading.

They both run well with overclocking and deliver similar results.

I believe older 4/8 chip designs won’t last as consoles push performance higher. The Ryzen 7 2700X and Ryzen 5 3600X are likely the new benchmarks for the 2020s and beyond.

It's likely. More chances seem to be on the table, though things have become less clear.

around 90$ for a CPU. But I have a chance of getting a i5-3570k for free.

I understand you might be able to find an affordable Ryzen build, but it seems you're waiting a bit longer before replacing your motherboard.

If upgrading to a Ryzen setup isn't feasible on your budget, tweak your existing motherboard's BIOS and verify compatibility with Xeons. Then consider purchasing an E3 1240v2 from eBay for $60. There’s currently one available for $45, offering a very attractive price. This model is a v2 version—only v2–v3 Xeons will work with LGA 1155. It’s essentially a locked i7-3770K, no overclocking allowed, but it’s significantly cheaper and still a solid choice. It makes sense in my calculations.
