You're considering a balance between performance and cost. For running 60fps shaders on a 970 CPU, a GPU like the GTX 970 is a solid choice. If you need even higher frame rates, the GTX 980 or better would be ideal. The key is matching the GPU power to your CPU's capabilities for smooth gaming.
Need a powerful setup with at least one 980ti GPU to smoothly run Minecraft at 720p, even with Triple Sli Titan X. It won’t work smoothly at 1080p on Ultra.
Looking for an i7 in Minecraft? You might need a GTX 980 Ti to go along with it.
I own a G3258 (4.2ghz) and a 750ti, but I'm getting 55 on SEUS Ultra. A 950 should work fine. For extra security, aim for 960. Edit: this is clearly thanks to OptiFine and the right configurations. Also, considering my render distance is at 8, if you need more distance, 960 would be better.
Shaders demand significant GPU power. I maintain over 60fps with OptiFine on my 970, but I suggest opting for a 390 at that cost since it offers superior performance. As others noted, you can still run them on less capable hardware, though achieving 60fps may require lowering render distance or adjusting other parameters. There are also alternatives to SEUS; they tend to perform better despite running faster.
Nvidia doesn't always boost performance as much for older systems. When the game was smoother, my 560ti handled it better than my friends' 7950.
