Hello, I'm working on setting up a server for my homelab with multiple functions including a secondary NAS, local AI server, Minecraft/astroneer/Gmod, BOINC, and other tasks. What OS would suit best? I've thought about Truenas Scale but some apps won't work with Docker. Linux servers were an option though they might lose a web UI for the NAS. Windows was also on the list but I dislike the remote desktop latency. I've checked HexOS but haven't decided to buy it yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Linux offers several options: OpenMediaVault, FreeNAS, TruNAS, and more. These are the two I’ve explored in detail.

Proxmox is a great option for running virtualized versions of TrueNAS and similar systems, enabling PCIe connections when required.

With Proxmox, you can set up everything as needed.

I wasn't aware you could virtualize Truenas. I thought Open Media Vault was better because it's an app rather than an OS, but I also appreciate the web interface of Truenas.

Sure, I don’t recommend doing it. A few days ago someone posted this video which could help clarify things about setting it up. I’m not connected to that specific channel—there are many on YouTube. It just so happened I had it saved.

Confirmed, I navigated through my HBAs personally and storage reports indicate everything is fine.

I haven’t tested it yet, but Red Hat offers Cockpit for managing web-based servers. There are likely other solutions as well; having a web UI seems to be the main barrier to using a Linux distribution. https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/intro-cockpit
