The top free antivirus solutions come from basic awareness. I rely on Avast for my own setup and Malwarebytes for others' machines.

My security tools are up to date, I don’t rely on Microsoft products. I’m using Avast and Malwarebytes for protection.

MSE is among them, and you already possess it, which is a good beginning. Malwarebytes is another reliable free option.

You don’t have to keep downloading every security tool—just what you truly need. I’ve got it, and I haven’t caught any viruses in years. If you think you need a bit more defense, try Avast.

Common Sense 2014 and Malware Bytes highlight that Microsoft Security Essentials isn't a secure antivirus solution because it's bundled with every Windows installation. This makes it widely used, yet also a frequent target for exploitation and compromise. Even the company itself has recognized this issue.

I choose AVG 2015 since it minimizes impact on performance during gaming and adds extra security with Malwarebytes.

It seems like this might be a copy of Avast, which has been around for more than 25 years. Personally, I’m not sure about it, but I feel confident in what I’m relying on.

I’ve noticed some issues with AVG running quietly in the background. Occasionally clicking on Facebook links triggers warnings that flag them as malicious and locks my account. I do have malware detection software, but it’s mostly used during full scans. Running it in safe mode usually catches nearly every virus, even the more dangerous ones.
