I’m planning to set up my PC this Saturday and I want to be extra cautious. Some might say go with basic sense, but I’m focusing on safety. I’ve heard it’s a good idea to run AV scans through Malwarebytes beforehand. That should give me peace of mind. Any tips?

LOL no... (malwarebytes isn't really that bad, the rest can all end up in trouble) Personally I use Eset nod32, it hasn't caused many problems for me, but if you're after something free, Microsoft Security Essentials is a decent choice. It comes built into Windows 8.1, while Windows 7 you'll need to install it yourself.

Also remember brain.exe. The top antivirus software is ineffective without it.

You need both malwarebytes and another antivirus like avg or avast for complete security.

This topic is confusing because everyone picks different antivirus options, and some don’t use anything at all. I won’t get a clear answer here—just a quick debate. My advice: postpone this discussion for two days, then come back and pick the best antivirus from a list. I’ll also add a poll to decide, and you can vote for your favorite. Stay tuned, @ MattTheMayor!
