Hey there! Your PC is still performing well and can handle modern games. You're thinking about boosting the CPU for better speed. With your current setup—Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, and a 24GB RAM slot—adding more RAM won’t change much for gaming performance. The extra 12GB will mainly help with multitasking and system stability, not drastically improve gaming frames per second. For the CPU upgrade, consider something like an i7-9700K or i9-13900K if you want noticeable gains.

Checking those components, are the Xeon chips more capable than the i7 980x and 990x? I'm looking for a noticeable boost in gaming, especially with flight sims like X-Plane 11.

You won’t notice extra memory unless you’re running out of the 12GB you currently have. When you hit that limit often, consider adding more. If it’s not a problem, skip it.

The Xeons are easy to find and affordable. The X series offers limited options for memory management. The W series provides more features, similar to an i7. Those i7s have maintained their value recently. I own an X5690 ES with a solid chip, though it feels a bit dull in terms of memory performance.

I frequently play X-Plane 11 and notice my RAM usage stays between 70-80% during gameplay. I’m curious if adding a bit more RAM would improve performance, though unless I’m approaching system limits it might not be worth the effort. Thanks for considering this. I also checked eBay and found used Xeons available for around £12 ($17).

Indeed. And to put that into perspective.. I paid roughly 650USD for my Xeon back in 2010.

Wow! It's hard to believe... On another point, I've never swapped a CPU before (it's prebuilt). I've heard about all these scary stories about pins getting bent, etc., is it really that simple? I'm completely new to this. I feel at ease opening the case, I've already changed the graphics card, RAM, fixed the fans, etc. But the CPU has always been a big worry for me, and now I'm finally ready.

It's quite simple to follow. Avoid touching the pins and don't place it on them. Align the marking with the one on the mobo and set it in carefully. Apply only light pressure, ensuring it's completely seated. It's a straightforward process.

This helps a bit. I hope you keep this in mind and consider watching a YouTube video.
