I recently switched to an RTX 3060 Ti from a 1060 6GB and it’s working well. I also got a new 1440p monitor. However, my i5 7600K is stuck at 100% while the GPU runs around 80-90% in games. It looks like some online calculators suggest I’m hitting a CPU bottleneck. Should I upgrade to a 9th gen CPU, since that’s the last available for LGA 1151 (and the 9600K seems to fit), or should I invest in a new motherboard and go with a 10th gen or higher? The 9th gen would be more affordable, but the 10th gen+ offers better future-proofing.
Compatibility depends on the socket and chipset, meaning your board won’t work with a 9th gen chip. The A12400F and B660 boards can handle older models well.
For my needs, investing in a fresh build (12th or upcoming 13th generation) would be preferable if the budget allows. Another option is an AMD AM4 motherboard with PCIe Gen4 capability. Ensure your motherboard supports a 9th generation CPU since many M.2 designs for 6th and 7th gen models don’t work with 8th and 9th gen CPUs, even if the CPU fits physically. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...ssors.html If you plan to upgrade, consider a Core i7 7700K when you find good deals.
For Intel 10th or 11th generation systems you should work fine. The 12th gen (LGA1700) mounting point is a bit different and isn't supported yet, pending a new bracket release. Keep in mind Hyper 212 has evolved through several generations—when did you install your CPU cooler? You may not have the right mounting bracket for the latest motherboard.
Back then, the GTX 10 line was brand new. I guess I could go for a fresh cooler too. I didn’t expect this graphics card upgrade to mean swapping out most of my setup completely, huh?
I understand. The GPU is relatively recent, so modern parts are definitely necessary. However, if the motherboard and CPU are still functional, you don’t have to replace everything. A CPU at full capacity with a GPU running at 80-90% is still a solid setup in my opinion. Of course, the GPU isn’t being used to its maximum potential, but if your games run smoothly and you’re fine with lower frame rates, no upgrades are needed. Stuttering at 0.1% might be a concern. Regarding the cooler, I’m not certain Cooler Master can provide a bracket for your new motherboard. Some manufacturers offer CPU brackets for existing customers when LGA1200 (10th or 11th gen Intel Core i series) was released.
I didn't mention earlier that during games with fully pinned CPUs I experienced severe stuttering and 1% lows. A compatibility site suggested pairing them reduces performance by about 30%, which isn't great. It's not a critical issue, but upgrading to a CPU and more RAM is likely on the horizon. Thanks for your feedback.
