The 980 won't see significant gains no matter the CPU it runs with, as it already offers a solid balance with the 4770k. A switch to something like a 1080ti might help a bit, but likely not enough to justify finding a decent 1080ti model.
You already have a well-rounded setup. The main processor I’m using right now is a 4790k plus 980, and I wouldn’t upgrade to a CPU for a 980 myself.
