Other than core temperature, this setup added a few additional applications and malware. Speedfan functions properly.

You can't make a custom setup and see what you're agreeing to. Personally, coreTemp is the top choice, assuming I'm not mistaken.

Don't worry about being called an idiot. I set up everything myself, even disabled the desktop shortcut, but it still added all those programs.
