I explored three options that closely match but aren't perfectly balanced in cost. Each idea has its strengths, but which one stands out depends on your needs. Competitor A offers a solid AMD setup with good performance and compatibility, while Competitor B provides an affordable Intel option with decent specs. Competitor C leans toward a mid-range i5 and includes a strong RTX 2080Ti. For gaming and productivity, the winner will vary—consider what matters most to you.

3600 easily outpaces 10400, pulling the latter into a more balanced contest. The 3600 performs better against 10600, exchanging strong blows. In multi-core scenarios the 3600 wins, whereas the 10600 excels in single-core situations. Ultimately, gaming performance hinges on your game preferences and the emphasis on single-core versus multi-core capabilities. A complete system evaluation isn't necessary here, especially since other components remain consistent. The main caveat arises with PCIe lanes—when additional drives are included, the 3600 loses four lanes, limiting its GPU allocation to 12, while the AMD retains ample bandwidth. Not all titles demand full PCIe 16x, but those that do benefit significantly from the AMD's capacity.

The Ryzen 4000 lineup is expected soon. For optimal performance, wait until then to secure a 4000 chip, an R5 3600, or even an R7 at a lower cost. Competitor A offers a cheaper alternative by reducing RAM to 3000 or 3200MHZ with improved clocks, potentially matching or surpassing the performance at a lower price. The R5 3600 provides the best overall value compared to Competitor B, which focuses on the i5 10400. The 3600 and 10600 outperform the 10600 in most areas except possibly thermal efficiency. For top gaming, the 10600 is ideal, though a K model could boost it further—though this would increase power consumption significantly. Overall, the Ryzen chip appears to outperform all alternatives in this range.

I’d choose the Ryzen 5 3600X for a bit more performance. Overclocking individual cores isn’t reliable, and the boosts are limited. The 3600X model offers a noticeable jump—about 200MHz more—without needing a huge price increase. My overclocked 5820K sits near that sweet spot, and it runs smoothly with the GTX 1080Ti. I believe this setup works well for you.

bad samples, intel's cooling was poor; consider adding a $50 cooler. also, matching 10400 with b460 would be more believable.

3600x looks great! 10400 seems pretty solid with its stock cooler, though I'm not sure about 10600. The 3600 stock cooler usually reaches about 95°C max, while mine does too...

I prefer the 3600 with a locked i5 any time of the week. The 3600 setup might be enhanced further using a superior motherboard, more RAM, an SSD, and other upgrades.

Adjustments made to the 3600 build PCPartPicker list. Item details refined for clarity and consistency. Prices and sources updated accordingly.

Samsung B-die at 3600MHz may not deliver the best results.
