I’d choose the 2600x if you can locate it for less than $100, otherwise a 3100 would be a safe bet.

For the 3100, upgrades are likely needed as you move forward. The 2600 offers solid performance but may not keep up with newer demands.

The 2600x looks strong, offering a 6c/12t setup compared to a 4c/8t with a newer design. It's hard to exceed a 3100 over 2600x. You won't be disappointed with either option. I believe the 3100 might be slightly more affordable.
