It really comes down to your preferred approach, but a solid team for your first run should include someone reliable, a good healer, and a tank. This helps you focus on exploring and learning the game without getting overwhelmed.

The companions are ready at the start and will provide you with a powerful panic button.

Whiterun. Both sides act foolishly. The Imperials refuse to give Skyrim to the Nords for an alliance ahead of the upcoming conflict. The Stormcloaks aim to remove the Imperials, who are the more powerful faction on the continent, since they permitted the ban on worshipping Talos. The Thalmor display an arrogant Aryan mindset even toward other Mer people.

Factions such as the Dark Brotherhood thrive in guilds. Mages guilds are open to joining all of them. For Stormcloak versus Imperial, I always choose Stormcloak.

Joining the companions offers more than just a place to rest and store equipment—it also brings extra allies, lycanthropy benefits, and connections with groups like the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Stormcloaks, Imperial Legion. Here’s a quick overview of the options you can consider.

The Empire was compelled to ban the veneration of Talos due to the White-Gold Concordat. Otherwise, Skyrim wouldn't exist in its current form, and there would be no Empire or Stormcloaks to spark a Civil War—since the Empire and Skyrim would have been drained of power and resources if the conflict had persisted. Ulfric Stormcloak is a foolish figure being manipulated to undermine the Empire with his minor uprising, pushing Skyrim into the Thalmor's control. Regarding the various factions, I haven't really engaged with the Companions; the Thieve's Guild is something I often activate, I bypass the Brotherhood and have experimented with the Mages Guild.
