I recently used the Brostrend AC1 adapter which overheated, melted, and smelled like burnt plastic before it failed. I'm now searching for a replacement. I've found the TP Link Acher T9UH AC1200 for $80 and the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 for $90. Would anyone suggest a high-gain dual-band adapter?

Could you consider using PCI Express over USB? I haven't experienced a PCI Express card failing or emitting odors. Just a thought...

My PC case is located under my desk, which means the PCI Express signal will be weaker. I’ve been using a USB adapter with a long cable and a mount for the Wi-Fi adapter, allowing me to place it higher on my desk or nearer to my modem.

USB gadgets often overheat and stop working. PCI Express units don’t. ASUS offers a PCI Express adapter with an antenna linked through a cable to the card. This lets you relocate it wherever required. USB WiFi isn’t great—it’s likely to remain so.

It mentions suitability for gaming, includes a heatsink, and you don’t need an external antenna—just rotate your PC.

That sounds promising. I've used TP Link WiFi cards before and they performed well.
