I've been away from the music scene for a while. I'm interested in returning to listening with music. Currently I rely on Spotify or Pandora, but I'd like to go back to purchasing music directly. I used to own an iPod Touch and used iTunes to upload my tracks. The problem is, I no longer like iTunes. I'm looking for a solid, dependable app that works with my iPhone 6 and Nexus 7 (running Lollipop). I want something with interesting features and a clean look. I don't want iTunes syncing all your music automatically without choosing what you want. My sister with special needs has an iPod, and she asked me to transfer her CD music to her device. I don't want my entire collection syncing to hers. After spending time figuring things out, I'm not sure how to download from a CD and upload it to her iPod. I'm also moving toward using Amazon MP3 on my iPhone. I use Amazon MP3 with my Nexus. Overall, I think iTunes isn't the best choice anymore. Any recommendations would be great! Thanks!

You need to choose between iOS or Android for a straightforward option.

Sync your media using iTunes for Apple devices, including stock iOS apps. Consider the Amazon MP3 app or cloud services for syncing. A premium Spotify subscription is suggested—it lacks ads, lets you play songs individually (not shuffled), and saves tracks. Adjust which media appears on various Apple devices via this checkbox: EDIT: To rip CDs, open Windows Explorer, right-click the CD, and choose the option.

Selective sync in iTunes has been mentioned before as a solution. If you're looking for a media player for your computer, I suggest considering Clementine.

Play music on Android or Apple with automatic syncing. If you face a sync problem, open settings and refresh. This app lets you save your tracks online, download them anytime, and supports all devices. You can also upload files from your computer easily.

This idea is great and Play All Access works well too. The main issue I have is that swipe actions often bring up different panels—like Control Center on some devices and Notification Center on others—making navigation confusing. Also, the back swipe doesn’t function properly on Android. Overall, it’s solid despite these quirks.

I use iFunBox, available at http://i-funbox.com/. Note: avoid the 2014 release; version 2.9 offers better stability. Make sure iTunes is installed since it provides the necessary drivers.
