Linus puppy runs smoothly on older systems with limited resources. It performed well on a single-core machine with just 512MB of RAM. The newest release requires around 256MB for optimal performance.

You might consider Zorin OS—it's the nearest Windows alternative I know among Linux distributions. EDIT: Regarding the interface, it remains relatively light.
