I'm setting up a PC for my mom's motherboard, which is an ASUS Prime Z790-P with Wi-Fi. I've attached the relevant schematic pages. I'm using an M.2 slot and a GTX 3060. I understand M.2 shares PCIe lanes, and I know the top slot is best for graphics. All three M.2 slots are a bit different, so I'm trying to figure out the optimal order to avoid any issues.

CPU features dedicated 16 PCIe Gen5 lanes plus 4 PCIe Gen4 lanes. Later Intel added another 8 PCIe Gen4 lanes (referred to as X8 DMI 4.0). In practice, one lane can be used continuously while the remaining are shared with other chipset functions like USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi.

It's good to know it won't affect graphics performance.

Generally, the highest PCIe port is typically the optimal choice for the GPU, while the premium M.2 slot is often preferred for a single M.2 device. Motherboards appear structured to allocate greater resources to components located higher up.

I understood it, but a while ago someone mentioned in a tech video I watched that M.2 slots sharing lanes with the PCIe could cause performance issues. It looks like that information might be old or incorrect.

On the motherboards I've worked with, the M.2 ports usually connect to PCIe lanes that overlap with the lower slots. The highest PCIe port typically has exclusive lane access, though this varies by model.
