I discovered an app needing Linux, so I’m using a VM. It’s tricky since I’m unsure which Linux distributions work. I just need something straightforward and user-friendly.

You're new to Linux, so choosing Ubuntu could be a great start. This doesn't mean other distributions aren't user-friendly—it's simply more approachable. The following choice would be Mint.

It doesn’t exist, are you asking about Ubuntu 18.04 LTS? If yes, it’s a solid choice for beginners.

Ubuntu usually offers extensive help for numerous applications, which is why I likely chose it.

Ubuntu is installed on my desktop but feels quite shaky. Organizing apps into folders isn’t working properly, and the settings don’t function as expected—I had to use a third-party app. I receive at least one error message each week. The login screen sometimes freezes, forcing me to switch to the command line for a restart. The genome launcher is also very slow; sometimes an app takes about 10 seconds to start, requiring multiple attempts before it works. I’d strongly recommend switching to Mint Cinnamon—it’s much more stable and offers a smoother interface.

From my perspective, Mint MATE is effective for new users.
