When I started assembling my PC, I didn’t focus much on the CPU and ended up with a 9400F. Now I’m facing performance issues in some games due to bottlenecks with my 2060 Super. I’m looking for a suitable CPU upgrade between $200 and $300.

I’d opt for a Ryzen 3600 paired with a solid B450 board, such as the B450-A PRO MAX from MSI. I’d stick to the 9400F chipset, avoiding anything more advanced unless you’re planning a later upgrade. A Z390 board wouldn’t make much sense right now.

Many individuals I discussed on Reddit expressed doubt about whether the upgrade was worthwhile.

From a 9400F to a 3600? It is quite a substantial upgrade - double the threads, more cache and slightly better single-core performance. But you could also wait for Zen 3 (Ryzen 4000) to launch, and upgrade to a 4600(?) when that comes out, as the leaks/rumours suggest they'll bring quite a hefty bump in performance even over the current-gen Zen 2 chips.

It's uncertain whether Zen 3 4600 will cost significantly more or if they'll reduce prices elsewhere.

Both the 2600 and 3600 were priced at $199 MSRP. I anticipate the 4600 might debut around $219, similar to the original 1600's launch price, though it could stay at $199 or rise to $249 (as seen with the 3600X). No official figures are available at this point.

Which game is stressing your CPU? Your 9400F doesn’t reach high performance on most titles you’ve tried.
