Pfsense offers extensive customization options, yet it functions effectively as a straightforward, pre-configured firewall—one of the most reliable I've encountered. Tek Syndicate produced a setup and walkthrough video a few years ago that I still find useful, though it may be a bit old now.

We typically deploy several PFSense firewalls in our environment, understanding their setup well. I’m curious if you have any additional recommendations.

The only alternatives I recall are Opnsense and ClearOS, though I have no prior knowledge of them and therefore can't suggest anything about them.

Only allows a limited number of port forwarding options, and I’d like to configure an openVPN server as well.

OPNSense is praised for its straightforward setup and user-friendly interface, offering features similar to a firewall appliance while maintaining simplicity. For advanced needs beyond basic firewall or routing, consider PFSense.

Another option to consider is Sophos tools. These are restricted by licenses but available at no cost. For instance, up to 50 IP addresses can be managed. That should work well. Sophos UTM Home Edition - https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/fr...ition.aspx Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition - https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/fr...ition.aspx The UTM also includes a VPN client. If you decide to proceed, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This seems really intriguing! I’ll definitely check it out. Having multiple extra PCs and network cards means I could set up a Sophos firewall and try things out even if I choose PFS.
