I’m searching for a hypervisor that can run directly on a single physical server. You need remote management, web-based control, ZFS integration, support for OpenVZ and KVM, and possibly some flexibility with management engines. I’ve considered oVirt but would prefer a dedicated management node. vSphere 6 seems constrained in its free tier, while Proxmox is subscription-based. XenServer works but its direction has shifted recently. Would you like alternatives that fit these requirements?

If hosting is acceptable and you're using Windows 8 Pro or any version of Windows Server, I recommend Hyper-V.

Proxmox is completely free to use without requiring any subscription. The only cost applies to support. According to their website, the source code for Proxmox Virtual Environment is released under the GNU AGPL version 3, making it openly available through a code repository for download, use, and sharing. After installation, you’ll receive prompts each time to consider purchasing a subscription, but this does not restrict your ability to use the software—it’s just an additional charge that doesn’t alter its core features.
