There are several solid sims available. Standard track racing includes Assetto Corsa Rally with Richard Burns, while modding support spans Assetto Corsa, GTR 2, Race 07, and Rfactor 1. Expensive options feature Raceroom Racing Experience and iRacing Sims, which has seen decline in popularity. Assetto Corsa stands out as the top sim with a vibrant modding scene.

A few years ago it might have been surpassed by many current games, mainly because their design and friction models are now outdated from the older engines they rely on.

I'm not familiar with track racing, I haven't tried it. Dirt 3 offers a rally feel that's entertaining. I'm not sure what I'm into beyond playing dirt 3. I enjoy city-based games and GTA V-style titles, but I prefer realistic driving experiences. My parents don't like the intense nature of GTA V, so I'm looking for something more authentic.

Modding helps preserve the game's age, particularly around events like Richard Burns Rally. Many users enjoy having maps created for Assetto Corsa, and there are efforts underway to adapt Los Santos into the game.

All these points covered. By the way, @spwath, if you're planning to play serious racing sims like Assetto or R3E, be sure to disable every assist. Personally, it's frustrating when too many features limit your progress. Also, with a G27, always race in full manual—clutch and shifter included. Real cars don't come automatic; only certain models use paddle shifts (F1, some rally vehicles, GT/Le Mans, touring cars). Enjoy the challenge!

In DiRT 3 you can disable the assists. Assetto Corsa offers a solid hardcare simulation, and the project car models are quite impressive.

I understood that. I meant I didn't like them, so I disabled them.
