You need a router suitable for a dorm setting with two wireless devices. It should handle 200Mb/s download and 100Mb/s upload speeds. The Google onHub looks promising, but you might want to compare other options before deciding.

You can find one with around 13 antennas for about 300$. I suggest checking the links provided for options nearer to 200$. Alternatively, the first link appears to be a good choice at roughly 200$, while the second looks like a strong alternative.

Your institution's rules typically prohibit users from sharing their Wi-Fi network name, as it could disrupt their existing setup.

Typically, most IT teams in schools will aggressively search for rogue routers with strong suspicion. They can't risk infections or letting unapproved devices connect to their networks.

If you can set up your own WiFi network, the Ubquiti Unifi nanoHD offers solid 5 GHz speeds (you won’t need the slower 2.4 GHz in a dorm). You should also consider using a dedicated router, such as the Ubiquiti Edgerouter-X, for better performance. It’s also important to identify the optimal WiFi channels—especially in crowded areas—by selecting less busy channels like 20MHz and 40MHz, and avoiding interference from nearby APs or routers.

They provide Ethernet connection, but for wireless options you need to bring your own router.
