I purchased a new 2700X from the Black Friday sale. I'm searching for a motherboard and planning to go with a solid B450 model since I won't be pushing the CPU beyond its limits. My setup will focus on streaming and gaming, with a budget of around $100 to $120. Also, do you think motherboard VRM components matter? I'm assuming they won't be needed if I don't overclock.
The MSI boards offer improved performance compared to others. A Google spreadsheet evaluates various motherboards based on VRM quality, such as AM4 Vcore ratings. Generally, for a 2700x configuration, a single green checkmark in the middle columns is sufficient to avoid overclocking. However, for future upgrades, it's advisable to choose a board with at least two green checkmarks. Narrow your options to a few models and select the one that best fits your needs, considering features like sound chip, USB connectors on the I/O shield, and SATA port count. From MSI, you have options like B450-A Pro [Max], ATX B450 Gaming Plus [Max], B450M Gaming Plus mATX, B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC ATX, and B450 Tomahawk [Max]. There are also versions with MAX and without MAX. MAX indicates a larger BIOS memory size, enabling more advanced graphics support. Boards lacking MAX tend to have text-based or grayscale BIOS interfaces. Asrock models are budget-friendly but offer limited connectivity, such as fewer USB ports and possibly no USB 10G support. From Asrock, the B450 Pro4 variant 1 and 2, B450M Pro4[-F] variant 1 and 2, and mATX B450M Pro4[-F] variant 2 are viable choices. If you prefer ITX, the Gigabyte B450I Aorus Pro WiFi stands out with strong features like ALC1220 sound, Intel Gigabit LAN, and 1.73 Gbps wireless, making it a superior alternative to many B450 boards.
I chose the Pro Carbon AC because it meets all my needs in performance and features, though it's currently unavailable where I am. I checked the Aorus B450 Pro Wifi, which includes many high-end motherboard features, but its VRM according to the spreadsheet appears subpar. Therefore, the Tomahawk Max seems like a solid option for now if I plan to upgrade to something like a 3700X later.
The MSI B45P offers some improvements over the ASUS TUF B450. For the X570, ASUS provides superior boards.
