I'd go for 20.0. It'll be supported until 2025. (I'm running 19.3). Cinnamon is the most popular, but I'm one of the weirdos that prefers the MATE desktop. There's also a discord desktop app, so no worries. 17.3 was the best there ever was, but it's no longer supported.
I don't care; I'm just using it unless it disappears once more.
