The B450M chipset is affordable and solid. I also have some extra boards available in the My PC guide if you'd like to check them out.

B450 allows you to switch to Ryzen 5000 later. Many B450 models now include updated BIOS that support Ryzen 5000. Choosing B450 instead of B550 means missing out on some features you might need, such as PCIe4 for graphics and SSDs, plus Smart Access Memory support.

The B450 chipset works with any motherboard, regardless of price. Whether you choose ASUS TUF Gaming B450 Plus, ASUS Prime B450 A, or ASUS ROG Strix B450 F Gaming II, it will function properly.

It really counts how solid the board is. I’ll put in a bit more to make sure it stays functional for at least another year. My first Deer PSU with the case failed after just one year. I swapped it out for an Antec 450W PSU from Best Buy. Before that, I updated the Socket A Duron 700Hz with an Athlon T-Bird 1.4MHz. The second BioStar board I owned was also in good shape.

PCPartPicker list shows a motherboard from ASRock B550M Steel Legend Micro ATX AM4. Price is listed at $109.99 with shipping and taxes included. Prices on Newegg are adjusted for rebates. Total before rebates is $129.99, after a $20 rebate it comes to $109.99. The board includes VRM heatsinks on the I/O side and RGB lighting if desired. Users can turn lights off, though some prefer not to use ASRock's built-in RGB control.

1. A chipset without any components doesn't matter much.
2. I question if these boards come with the correct BIOS; you'd have to install it yourself.
3. Inspect the heatsinks on the boards—look for VRM units typically located on the left and top of the socket. On some models with dual RAM slots, having only VRMs at the top is acceptable, and even a single VRM is preferable over a board without any.

Consider RAM speed options for the Ryzen 3 3100: 3200 MHz or 3000 MHz or a different range.

I recently installed an additional system and connected a 3100 with a MSI Mortar B450m and Corsair LPX 3200mhz. It performs smoothly thanks to solid 4.2Ghz all-core overclocking on the CPU. The only non-standard component is the Wraith Prism cooler I received from a friend. EDIT - I know 3600mhz RAM is ideal for Ryzen 3000 models, but I’m not sure you’ll see a noticeable difference between 3000/3200/3600 if I’m being honest.

B450 offers strong performance at a low cost, plus it can be upgraded for Ryzen 5000 models – a clear advantage of this setup.
