I upgraded my home server and managed to get a 2700X at a great price. I already have 32GB of DDR4-3000 CL16 RAM, so all I needed was a new motherboard. My budget stays under $150, and I won’t be pushing the CPU beyond its limits right now. I’m okay with a board that can support the upcoming 3950X if I decide to upgrade later. What I’m looking for is something with strong VRM and cooling to handle that processor continuously. The Asus Prime X470-Pro is currently my top pick, but are there any alternatives within my budget?
The X470-Pro isn't exceptionally strong, but it should work without overclocking. Would you like a carbon version of the X470 Gaming Pro or a Taichi? Remember, consumer hardware isn't built for heavy server use. Also, consider the airflow—an enterprise setup with 12 fans at 8000rpm and 70dba will be very different from a quiet build with slow fans. Sufficient airflow can compensate for weak VRMs. A board with Intel GBE is also suggested, as it offers better driver support across operating systems.
Server will host Plex, NAS, and Blue Iris(NVR), so it won’t be pushed excessively. It will be installed in a FD Define R4 with two 140mm intake fans and a 140mm exhaust fan equipped with an air cooler on the CPU. I intend to install a 10G NIC now, though an Intel 1G NIC is acceptable at this stage.
