Hello, I own a solid 10Gbps connection at my home office and three workstations. One uses a MacMini, while the other two are standard PCs. Right now I rely on Asus XG-C100C cards for both, but they frequently lose the connection briefly, sometimes after a restart until I reconnect the cable. After unplugging and plugging it back in, they stop working. The manufacturer hasn’t released drivers or firmware updates to resolve these problems. I have CAT6 cables in the walls, roughly 10 meters away from the switch, which should work—this setup already functions with my MacMini. I’m considering alternatives like SPF+ with a transceiver or a 10Gbps BASE-T connection. Ideally, I’d need drivers for Linux (current Ubuntu version) and preferably Windows 10 support, though that’s less critical since I mainly use it for gaming. Having a single Ethernet cable to the switch would be a big plus.

Typically you can find Intel X540 units in either T1 or T2 configurations at good value on eBay. For system compatibility, Intel generally offers strong driver support.

I've seen them online, they look decent, however I'm worried if they can do full 10Gbit because they are PCIe v2.1 (which at x8 is "5.0 GT/s" quoting their specs) . Do you have any experience with them?

PCIe 2.1 x8 delivers 4GB/s speed, equivalent to 32Gb/s, offering ample capacity. A 5.0 GT/s rate applies to PCIe 2.0/2.1, not the bandwidth of an 8-lane 2.1 link. I don’t have direct experience with these standards. Personally, I use the XG-C100C and haven’t encountered any problems. The X540 is highly praised in home server communities and subreddits.

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like this should address your problem. I’ll order the cards and check out what happens next.

In fact, I misstated something earlier. I do have experience with the X540-T2. I purchased a set a while back but chose models with compact heatsinks and fans. Those fans were excessively noisy (they failed) and the cards would overheat without them, so I had to return them. Although they functioned fine, they handled 10Gb/s easily. My recommendation is to opt for a model with a larger passive heatsink instead of relying on fans. If you must use a fan, consider swapping it for a 40mm model from brands like Noctua to cut down on noise. Another choice could be Intel’s SFP+ variants and connect them via SFP+ or an SFP+ to a 10G RJ45 module. The X520 seems to be the SFP+ equivalent of the X540.

I own a pair of Intel X550 network cards. They perform well and run quietly. Consistently achieves full 10GB speeds without problems. Previously, some Asus cards failed completely, so I bought the X550s from eBay after that experience.

I recently purchased a used X540-T2 with an oversized heatsink and no fan. I started using it yesterday and everything seems to be working fine. The speed test is a bit slower now, but it appears sufficient—https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/ad5cc1b0-dedb-4c28-a5cf-5cc7a5e79811
