Hey! I just completed my first rig and am considering an aftermarket cooler. I'm looking for a way to accurately monitor my CPU temperature during heavy use—any suggestions for free software that people trust? Also, would it be possible to see the CPU temps in real-time while playing a game?

I like hardware monitors and real temp readings the most. Other choices include speed fans or core temp tools, though I hope this helps. I didn’t mention why I prefer them, but both offer straightforward interfaces that are easy to use. The hardware monitor provides a wealth of useful data, including accurate voltage readings based on my experience. Realtemp also has a good alarm system, letting you set safe temperature limits so you’ll be alerted if the CPU gets too hot. You can find more info here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and here: http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/

Yes, you can see a FPS FPS overlay displaying your stats during gameplay.

The alarm in realtemp activates when it's running in the background. With multiple screens, you could keep them open on different ones, though it seems unlikely you're using several at once.

RealTemp is my top choice for CPU temperature tracking. For GPU monitoring, MSI Afterburner works well.

Based on my observations, MSI Afterburner doesn't track CPU temperature or usage in most cases. It mainly focuses on GPU monitoring.

In the settings, you have the option to control what RTSS shows beyond just GPU performance metrics. NOTE: currently it tracks data per core, which means CPU utilization won’t be calculated correctly unless your display covers the entire screen with the overlay.

I believe this can be achieved using a mix of HWINFO64 and msi afterburner.

I rely on core temp which functions well, CPU ID remains accurate, but the CPU core displays an icon in the taskbar under the icons area.
