Tomorrow I’m getting an upgrade. I have some questions about it.
Tomorrow I’ll install an SSD into my system. Right now I only have a HDD. What’s the simplest approach to run Win 10 on the SSD while reformatting the HDD? Should I reformat the HDD first before setting up Win on the SSD, or is there another way? Also, why does Windows think defragmenting an SSD is a problem? I’ve heard it just adds extra reads and writes, so maybe I should turn it off. Thanks for clarifying!
When the SSD is free of data, you can place Windows directly onto it. If you proceed, unplug the HDD to simplify the setup. Power off the machine, plug it back in, and restart. After installation, you’ll be able to use both OSes via a reboot or BIOS if required, though copying files between them is also possible once Windows is active on the SSD.
Optimal approach is to take the HDD out, set up Windows on the SSD, then bring the HDD back and format it while using Windows (running on the SSD). Windows 10 won’t perform a full defrag on an SSD; it will execute TRIM, similar to what’s needed for HDDs but without excessive writes. EDIT: Microsoft also adjusted the terminology from "defragment" to "optimise" or comparable phrases to avoid misleading users about SSD maintenance.
