After considering some thoughts on which ship to choose as a second, I have an Avenger, but I’m unsure if I should pick Freelancer, Freelancer Dur, or the F7C-S Hornet Ghost. Are these options available for use like my Avenger? Also, I’ve been buying standalone ships—please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Hornet will let you join Arena Commander, but you'll need a trainer Hornet and your own in the hangar—make sure you have an alpha pass.

You own all the Arena Commander pass and have the full package with your Avenger, so buying a standalone ship is correct. Also, is the Hornet the top choice among the available ships?

Although hornet is primarily designed for combat roles among the aircraft you can currently fly, it doesn't stand out as the top choice. Personally, I prefer the 300i more. It offers greater agility, better cockpit visibility, and comes with three Omnisky's, which provide significant damage potential.

If you're aiming for a more adventurous experience, the Origin 315P is a solid pick. It excels in exploration, offers decent weaponry, and includes a usable cargo bay. For those needing more space, consider the Freelancer or Freelancer DUR if you plan to haul goods through risky areas. The Freelancer Max isn't ideal due to its weak weapon set. The DUR provides good long-range scanners and solid arms. If you enjoy close combat and speed, the Hornet is perfect—it's compact, nimble, and well-armed. You can select from the standard F7C, the F7C-S ghost model, or the F7C-R tracker. I’d recommend the basic version for flexibility, but if piracy is your passion, go with the Cutlass. It’s not my cup of tea, but it’s up to you. With a budget of a few hundred dollars and a crew of four, the Constellation is an outstanding choice—truly impressive!

Between the base freelancer, the DUR variant, and the Ghost Hornet, I chose the DUR. It offers similar functions to the standard model but with reduced cargo, longer fuel endurance, and some additional improvements. The Ghost Hornet is entertaining, though it isn't a primary combat vessel. All three should support using a trainer Hornet in DFM until their releases arrive.
