I just received an Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-45) and realized my understanding of USB-C was incomplete. I thought the type 2 port would work with my dock, but this model lacks a display over USB-C, so docking isn’t possible. Since I planned to use it with an existing dock setup, I’m thinking about returning it and figuring out a replacement.

I need a dock that supports at least a Thunderbolt 3 port for full functionality. My budget is roughly $2k to $2200 in the US. Gaming is my main focus, but I also use it for software development (mostly LAMP and MEAN with VS Code) and digital art. I have an XP-Pen tablet and Clip Studio Paint.

I was hoping for a core i7 processor, a GeForce 3070+, and at least a 1TB SSD. Longevity is important to me—I want to avoid frequent replacements. Since I plan to use it docked often, I don’t have strong preferences on display quality, size, or battery life.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

the product is identified as a "WavLink USB C Docking Station".
linking the hub to a USB type-c port is sufficient for operation.
there is no reference to Thunderbolt in its description or details.

Thunderbolt is not an independent port type; it's a protocol that certain USB-C ports can accommodate. A USB-C port lacking Thunderbolt support can only handle up to 10GPBS, and may not even manage display data as I discovered. It's important to identify the specific USB-C port you have.

and aren't you seeking a model that explicitly mentions Thunderbolt support? which it doesn't.
