Getting any new parts right now isn't an option, so I'm using what I already have. I plan to push the performance of my Ryzen 5 1600 as much as possible while streaming games. What clock speeds should I start with? My main concern is the benefit from switching from three sticks to two for dual-channel 16GB RAM. Also, would this help with overclocking my memory? Here are my specs: CPU - Ryzen 5 1600 (Non AF), GPU - GTX 1060 6GB SSC & GT 1030 2GB GGDRILL, RAM - three DDR4 8GB 2400MHz sticks, Corsair STORAGE, SSDs, PSU 650W 80+ bronze.
Current CPUs already utilize dual-channel for RAM, so modern systems can handle this efficiently. You might compare both setups to see if it helps. Likely yes, though results depend on the specific chip. You'd need to test your particular processor. With Ryzen Master, adjust the voltage to 1.4V and increase clocks until instability appears. This sets a baseline. Then decide whether to aim for higher clocks or lower voltages. Always trim 50-100 MHz afterward to maintain stability.
I haven't tried it before, but I think overclocking RAM with three sticks could be quite shaky. Instead of tweaking everything, just turn on XMP on your motherboard and accept the result. For CPU overclocking, gradually increase the frequency step by step until you hit instability. Ryzen Master is helpful since it lets you test without needing to restart each time. Start by boosting all cores by 250 MHz at a time, apply the changes, run Cinebench, and observe stability. Keep pushing until it crashes while running Cinebench, then revert to the last stable clock speed. Then slowly lower the voltage bit by bit, testing each change with Cinebench in between to confirm stability. Once it stops working, return to the lowest stable voltage. Sometimes lowering the voltage helps maintain cooler temps, allowing better performance. Other times it doesn't matter much—it depends.
Check the RAM by turning on XMP/DCAP if needed. If it doesn’t work, try using two sticks since three is usually reliable. If two sticks don’t help, update the BIOS—otherwise, you might have missed a chance because the integrated memory controller on Zen 1 is problematic and causes many issues.
You can boost memory speed using DOCP/XMP settings or by manually changing the DRAM voltage (SOC voltage may help occasionally). After that, make small adjustments to the timing parameters. RAM has a significant impact on performance when paired with Ryzen; it helps extract more power from the CPU. It’s best to tweak RAM settings first, then proceed with CPU overclocking. I found it harder to get stable overclocked RAM with an OC'd CPU compared to a standard one. For CPUs, start with a single-core boost matching the base frequency (around 3.6GHz). If you have enough heat and stability margins, push higher boost speeds. Target around 3.8–3.9GHz is typical. A 4GHz speed usually needs premium chips and higher voltage, which isn’t ideal for long-term use. AMD suggests a maximum of 1.45V; I’d cap it at about 1.4V for safety. You didn’t mention your motherboard, which also affects achievable speeds.
