Tips for transferring your SSD from an older PC with Windows to a new build
Hi, I understand the situation you're facing. After installing Windows 11 on your new PC, you've encountered challenges with the SSD. The forums suggested checking the SSD, but those discussions didn't resolve the issue. You've tried a different SSD and still had problems. You're considering transferring your existing SSD into the new build, which is a smart approach. Just be aware of potential compatibility issues—ensure the new SSD matches the specifications of your motherboard and system. If you decide to visit Micro Center, make sure they have experience with similar upgrades. Your recent purchase of CPU and motherboard from them should help streamline the process. Good luck!
The key issues I've noticed include encryption methods like BitLocker and Secure Boot, plus the use of an older installer that relies on MBR instead of GPT. Once the system starts, performance differs greatly—sometimes smooth, other times frustrating.
Some more specifics: cpu - amd ryzen 7 7800x3d motherboard - gigabyte b650 gaming x ax ram - 4x 16 gb sticks (2 kits) of G.SKILL Flare X5 Series gpu - amd 7800 xt ssd - samsung 990 pro 2 tb second ssd (bought expecting to fix issue, didn't work) - Crucial P3 Plus 2TB More specifically I can't choose my SSD as a boot option when CSM is disabled. I've updated my SSD, my BIOS. However, even when I try to install windows 10, what happens is my windows 10 seems to install but when it restarts it goes back to the initial install screen as if nothing happened. If I take out the installation USB and try to boot into the SSD, it reads like an empty drive. here's a thread of me asking for help from a windows support agent: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...fbf44ff0e4 TLDR: they conclude it seems to be a drive issue, which led me to the Samsung forums but I didn't try all that hard tbh, and just ordered a new SSD hoping that it would fix my issues. I didn't mention too much of these issues in my initial question because I've given up really on trying to fix it unless someone can point me in an unexpected direction, but I'd rather just have my new computer up and running. I'm planning on moving my SSD tomorrow when I have some time since it doesn't seem too terrible.
I reviewed that forum discussion. It wasn't obvious whether you were saving changes and restarting after adjusting CSM settings. I remember facing a similar problem before, where CSM caused the issue. If I were you, I'd attempt another try, testing various CSM configurations. Begin with the most lenient settings.
I've noticed many reports about problems with four DDR5 RAM modules. It's unclear if this applies to your situation. You might want to try using just two sticks to check if it improves things. Last year Samsung experienced a firmware problem with M2 drives, but if you bought the drive recently, the issue should be resolved. I purchased a Samsung Pro M2 from Microcenter five months ago and its firmware was already updated.
I handled the CSM settings and tested various combinations, but it still didn’t succeed. The installation keeps looping through the same windows setup, and after a restart, everything appears to reset. I upgraded my drive, but haven’t tried with dual RAM yet—I’ll check that later.
I transferred my SSD with Windows into the new PC, but when starting up it shows an error saying it will move back to the old computer. I’m wondering if there was a mistake during the transfer. Also, I enabled CSM to pick this as a boot option. Anyone have any advice on what went wrong?
