Tips for setting up home networking for beginners
Recommendations for a complete beginner for home set up (Canada) Hi all, I'm starting out to look for a better wireless connection throughout my home to take advantage of the 500mbps up and down. Currently I have a TPLink M4 nodes to provide mesh network and am getting around 50 up and down while on VPN and around 150 up and down while not on VPN. I realise I can probably do better than that and am interested in getting better connection so I thought I'd hop on Ubiquiti bandwagon as everyone is telling me to do. After going through the Ubiquiti website and others who've already gone through with their own set up, I've come up with this set up: UniFi Dream Machine $389, UniFi Switch PoE (150W) $259, and 3 x UniFi FlexHD Access Point. $229 × 3 (sold out at the moment) My house is 2 story with a finished basement, with HH3000 router from Bell in the basement, mechanical room (corner of the basement). The house has 4 pre-wired ethernet ports throughout the house, one in the basement connected to desktop, one on the first floor and two on the second floor. I was thinking of putting the DM (replacing HH3000) and the switch in the basement , place each of the APs on the each floors with ethernet backhaul (For basement there is another ethernet port but would have to rewire it from the mechanical room where the initial connections are) What do the more smarter people think? Is it an overkill for a regular consumer family with 6 or 7 wireless devices connected at all times? Also, to me the price feels quite high, coming in at $1510 after taxes. Would it be worth it?
