Hi everyone, I’m seeking some guidance on wireless routers. My current Netgear model is no longer working, so I’m now relying on an ISP-provided device that functions adequately but has a few annoying issues. Since I’m not concerned much about cost if the gear is solid, I’d prefer to avoid unnecessary spending. I’ve used Netgear products before but am open to switching if the features meet my needs.

I do some online gaming with friends, frequently use VPN and RDP at work, and own several wireless devices. That’s why strong Wi-Fi performance is important for me. Recently, I received a few Ubiquiti UAP-AC-Pro APs which should improve the wireless setup, and I already have a couple of Ubiquiti switches.

I’d like a new router with these features built-in: native support for four 1GB network ports, excellent wireless coverage or easy expansion (the UAP-AC-Pros may handle this), and VLAN/VPN capabilities. Ideally, it would have a built-in fiber modem if possible—though I’m not sure about the advice on that. A fiber connection to the cabinet isn’t ideal for me, as I’m in the UK and haven’t tried FTTP yet. Some people suggest avoiding built-in modems.

My old router had one, so I’m unsure if it was the issue. I’m considering an ISP router with a built-in modem, but I’m not entirely convinced. I also saw options like the Asus RT-AC86U, ASUS DSL-AC68U, Netgear D7000-200UKS, and the Upiquiti Dream machine (though the latter is pricey). I have some Ubiquiti equipment already, so that could work well.

Would any of these suggestions help? Thanks in advance!
