Tips for purchasing a laptop - comparing HP Probook 455 G8 with Acer Swift 3 and additional recommendations
Hello,
I’m interested in purchasing a new laptop for my 16-year-old daughter. It will be used for schoolwork, browsing, and some video editing—no gaming required. The budget ranges from £400 to £800.
I’m considering a 15 to 16-inch display, weighing between 1.7 and 1.8 kg, with a hard drive size of 500 to 1000 GB, 16 GB RAM, and a warranty span of 3 to 4 years. It should not require an optical drive and will be bought from Germany.
Right now, I’m evaluating the HP 455 G8 with either a Ryzen 7 5800 U or Ryzen 5 5600 U processor. I’m also looking at the 16-inch Acer Swift 3, but its Intel Core i7-11370H processor feels less suitable compared to the Ryzen options. It would fit well within my budget.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have consistently appreciated the Lenovo products.

Any CPU should suffice; the main focus is on using an SSD rather than a traditional hard drive.
Prioritize screen brightness, aiming for at least 300 nits.
When evaluating models, consult review platforms to assess upgrade possibilities.
Consider the flexibility of upgrading components, such as replacing an 8GB unit with a more affordable 8GB version and installing it yourself instead of paying extra for a 16GB model.
Alternatively, opting for a smaller hard drive often allows for self-upgrading to an SSD.
Thank you for the guidance. I looked at Lenovo, discovered a fitting setup and purchased it.
