Tips for enhancing your memory performance!
I’m considering increasing my laptop’s memory capacity. It currently holds a Samsung 4GB DDR4 2133MHz module. A compatible part offers an 8GB DDR4 2666MHz unit. Experts suggest pairing them would let the system use the slower 2133MHz memory, limiting performance. You’re wondering if adding the 8GB to the existing 4GB would total 12GB. Would it be correct to think of it as 4GB plus 8GB? Your decision is important—please let me know your thoughts!
The memory controller will operate both sticks at the slowest speed. You can merge 4+8, but that won’t give dual channel. A combination of 4+4 could offer higher performance. Make sure to verify the RAM types your laptop supports, as this information is often available online or on the manufacturer’s support site.
When using dual channel, are both memory sticks required to be identical in size? (For example: 4GB each)
Yes, for dual channel you ideally want the same size, speed and CAS latency. There is something called " FLEX mode ", where part of mixed RAM operates in dual channel and some of it does not though. I'm not sure if this is supported by all motherboards and/or laptops.
