Hey there, tech enthusiasts,
I’m reaching out for some advice on boosting the performance of my 10-year-old Lenovo W530 running Windows 81. I’ve tried several changes so far: replacing the hard drive with an SSD, increasing RAM to 32GB, applying new thermal paste, and cleaning the fans. However, after six months, it’s still lagging noticeably during tasks. My next idea is a fresh OS install using Tiny10 or Tiny11, and even considering Linux, I’m constrained by time and budget. This machine is my primary one, and I’d love to upgrade—even if it means refurbishing—but I can’t afford the hassle of dealing with drivers or compatibility issues. Some keycaps are coming off, but overall it still functions. I’m hoping to make better use of it without needing a new computer. What should I do?

Thanks a lot!

What you've done is sufficient concerning the hardware.
Tiny10 or Tiny 11...no.
They don't offer any real OS performance improvement and remove many essential features.
Linux works fine, or stick with it as is.
Of course, we don't know the specifications of this system.

Thanks for the response,
@USAFRet. My consideration with Tiny was a) a new version is preferable and b) having security updates is important. However, it made me think about possibly needing a fresh install of Tiny8.1.

"Tiny" solutions aren't the answer.
A new installation is needed.

A new laptop is the answer. Typically, three to five years is considered sufficient.
