Tips for a soon-to-be Windows user?
Hey everyone, I'm still figuring things out but I'm getting ready to order parts for my first gaming PC soon. It's something I've been wanting for ages, so I'm really excited! Could anyone share some advice on what you do when a new computer starts up? Which programs should you install first? Do you have any antivirus suggestions? As someone who's used OS X all their life, I'm a bit confused about the Windows side. Thanks ahead!
It's not necessary to install antivirus on Windows 8.1. The tools you mentioned work well: a browser, Skype, Steam, Lightshot. PDF reader and 7-Zip are also reliable. For Ninite, check out https://ninite.com/.
Chrome or Firefox available by choice; Steam or Origin, Java, Flash, Notepad++. Main site is https://ninite.com/. Alternatives include Puush, Gyazo, Lightshot, Screensnapr. No antivirus required with common sense; otherwise, Windows Defender and Malwarebytes work on 8.1.
You'll need to perform upkeep frequently and rely heavily on third-party applications: Windows doesn't provide everything on its own. Learn about Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner for malware care, and use built-in tools like the defraggler for system maintenance. I have a video on adware here:
I visit https://ninite.com/ and choose Chrome or Firefox as per your preference. Acrobat Reader, Java, VLC Player, OpenOffice (unless you intend Microsoft Office), Security Essentials, Steam (for gamers), and for Windows 8.1 I’d prefer Classic Start—though that’s just my take.
For Mac users transitioning to Windows, an antivirus is essential. Avast, Malwarebytes, AVG, or Kaspersky work well.
I rely on this site (ninite.com) for individuals who purchase a PC for the first time and looking for free software, codecs, etc. It installs several programs at once. This is exactly what I do. Browser: Chrome; Messaging: Skype; Media: VLC, Winamp plus some codec pack; Runtimes: java, flash, shockwave, silverlight; Installation: pro or hobby? Documentation: Office or something; Security: essentials and malware bytes; Extra: 7-zip, STEAM — all very basic. Are you planning to "twitch" your games or try something else?
