What could have shifted since things were normal?
To check the i5-11400's performance, try the cpu-Z benchmark. You should see a single-thread score around 542 and a multithread score of 4012.
Single-thread matters more for gaming.

You need to perform a CPU-Z benchmark test.

CPU-Z is installed, version 2.12, and the test results indicate 538.9 for single and 4258.0 for multi.

Agree to this upgrade suggestion.
Upgrade the RAM to 32GB and install a better graphics card.
This should improve performance by about twice.

PCPartPicker Part List

($45.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: ASRock Phantom Gaming OC Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB Video Card

I looked on the ASUS website and found many processors that could be changed. I already have BIOS 2001 installed, which is the most recent version available. It might be more cost-effective for me to upgrade the CPU again and add more RAM. I could simply install two 16GB sticks to reach 32GB total. Which CPU and RAM would you recommend? Thank you.

It's possible to function with your existing CPU for Gray Zone Warfare. However, you'll still require sufficient RAM and GPU according to the system specs. A fresh, high-quality power supply is also advised, even if you're upgrading your build.

Obtain a brand new 2x32gb DDR4 3200 cl16 kit. Prices are currently under $50. Combining two 2x16gb kits, even with identical models, may cause instability. A fresh CPU won't significantly help on the same setup. For a real upgrade, you'll need to switch to a different platform.

Your CPU-Z assessment indicates your i5-11400 is functioning well.
Try another benchmark: play your games while lowering quality settings and resolution.
This allows the GPU to work more efficiently.
Improved results may mean your CPU can handle a more powerful GPU.
Alternatively, if performance stays similar, it suggests your CPU is the bottleneck.
Without replacing the motherboard, the best upgrade would be an I9-11900K, which is suitable for multithreaded applications (200 used on eBay), though a modest gaming boost depends mainly on single-thread performance.
You can find 13th and 14th generation Intel processors at affordable prices, mainly due to market expectations rather than necessity.
Intel has resolved the underlying issues of these models.
Here’s their official update from 9/25/2024:
https://community.intel.com/t5/Blog...sk...633446#M40
The warranty for these products has been extended by two years.
Just confirm your motherboard supports the updated BIOS.
I believe the new ultra 5-245K and 7-265K processors will be well welcomed.

As others have mentioned, I would begin by upgrading your RAM to 32GB to check if that fixes the problem. Once that's done, I would move on to upgrading the GPU. You should have more GPU choices available in a month, so you might want to delay the purchase if the RAM upgrade isn't effective. If the issue persists, you can upgrade the whole system to AM5 at this stage, as there will still be an upgrade path until around 2027. Selling your old components could help offset some costs. This approach lets you assess whether the problem has been resolved, and it allows you to spread out your spending so you're not overwhelmed by a single purchase. You might also save money by taking advantage of good deals.
