I updated the graphics card to a newer model and... it slowed down noticeably. 30-40 frames per second dropped for a few seconds—clearly noticeable but not game-breaking. The FPS cap now limits it to 20-30 instead of 30-40. I haven’t reinstalled the operating system, as Windows 10 should handle the chipset change smoothly. All drivers are current. I’ve used MSI Afterburner to log some data, but no significant changes appear. CPU and GPU temperatures remain stable (or CPU usage drops), and RAM usage is consistent. Changing settings like the native mouse cursor or switching to DirectX didn’t help. It seems the software itself is likely broken, possibly not understanding how to run at 100 FPS. The hardware specs look fine, so I’m unsure where to start troubleshooting.
It would seem the initial concern was valid. Indeed, Windows 10 performs well with chipset changes. However, certain drivers and registry configurations may still lead to complications. The system spans three generations, moving from consumer to workstation.
I removed several hidden devices with their drivers from the Device Manager. Performance improved noticeably—less obvious and possibly a few frames less lost. I might have deleted too many, so I wasn’t sure if any of them contributed. I deleted the i5-4670K, old wireless, and Z-series chipset components and drivers (where could I have gone wrong?). Do you know what else I should try? It’s likely worth more than just a few frames here, and understanding Windows behavior would help.
