Lightning can indeed reach connected devices even if they're not directly hit, especially when multiple items share the same power source. The surge protector likely helped mitigate damage by diverting excess voltage. It's good to stay informed about safety measures. Please let me know if you need more details.
We lost both our internet and phone lines due to a lightning strike in the yard, which didn’t directly affect the house or any connected devices. We removed the router/modem and landline. For better protection, consider installing a suitable UPS unit with 1000-1500VA capacity. Updated April 12, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added more details
Using an ethernet connection is definitely there. In the past you could use surge protectors with telecom and coaxial routing. Last year my main TV "cable" router was damaged, cutting off the Ethernet only as it passed through the primary router to the secondary one, which caused a power issue on the secondary. The TV and WiFi still functioned properly, and a 60-foot Ethernet cable worked too. Most devices have fuses for powerline concerns but not much protection on simple Ethernet ports.
