I chose a Threadripper build after noticing benchmark results online. Initially, I believed a higher benchmark meant better gaming performance, but when I tried CPU-heavy titles like Minecraft and League of Legends, I saw the opposite. The Threadripper appealed to my interest in detailed work—editing videos and 3D rendering—but it doesn’t handle video editing tools smoothly. Upgrading later made sense since AMD kept using the same socket generations.

My current setup struggled to hit 300-400fps on 1080p, even though my old system with a GTX 960 and an older i5 ran at 120fps for games like Overwatch (200-300fps). I realized the issue was likely my CPU, not the graphics. League of Legends is mostly CPU-intensive, so performance dropped significantly in team fights. With a Gigabyte RTX 2080 Gaming OC and 8GB RAM, I run League of Legends at around 120FPS with medium settings. It often drops to 50-100FPS during intense moments, but usually stays between 120-240FPS when not in team fights.

Upgrading my monitor from 1920x to 2920x might boost FPS noticeably. I found comparisons online showing a big jump in performance with higher resolutions, especially for games like League of Legends and Minecraft. However, the reviews seemed limited to lighter titles, which didn’t match the demands of competitive gaming.

Thanks for your guidance! I'll give it some time because it isn't urgent. If I switch the CPU, MOBO, and cooler, I'd likely pick a newer Ryzen CPU from generation 3. The main goal was to make it simple to upgrade to a Gen 2 TR. I'm curious about whether this would really improve performance, especially in games that rely mostly on CPU power. I noticed the data from those links suggested a big jump from 35fps to over 400 frames per second with different resolutions, which seemed impressive but hard to believe.

This new TR3 model performs decently in gaming, though not as strong as the latest Ryzen 3000 chips. It still offers good multi-threaded performance, making it a solid choice for tasks like 3D rendering. If you have a budget for a better motherboard, upgrading to something like AM4 B450 or X570 would be worthwhile. The TR2 remains costly and lags behind even a strong R5 3600 in benchmarks, especially when compared head-to-head. For professional work, the 3000 series still falls short by a significant margin. If you're mainly gaming and value multiple cores, sticking with an 8-core 3700X might be enough, but a 3900X could be a good upgrade if you can afford it. The 3950X is hard to find right now, but waiting until late January might be worth considering.
